IT Home News, September 30: Tech media outlet The Verge published a blog post today (September 30) reporting that the 2026 OpenAI Developer Day (DevDay) opened in San Francisco amid large-scale protests.
Including the Bay Resistance, Tech Workers Coalition, and Service Employees International Union (SEIU), more than 15 organizations jointly organized the rally.
The rally was held outside the event entrance at Fort Mason in San Francisco, where banners reading "People are more important than AI" and other slogans were displayed. Protesters wore cardboard robot costumes and waved sickle props.
The protesters mainly targeted issues such as the environmental impact of data centers and the concentration of power in the AI industry. One protest flyer demanded that AI data centers keep a "safe distance" of more than 100 miles (IT Home note: approximately 160.9 km) from residential areas.
