Paolo Molesini, president of Fideuram, the private banking arm of Italy's largest bank Intesa Sanpaolo, became the target of a fraud operation in February this year that combined fake WhatsApp messages and Deepfake voice technology, resulting in the loss of over $100 million. He resigned in March. Molesini first received a WhatsApp message that appeared to come from the parent company's CEO, Carlo Messina, asking him to help process a huge overseas transaction. He then received a phone call from a senior partner at a major law firm. But the caller was not a real person — it was fraudsters using an AI model to imitate the lawyer's voice (i.e., Deepfake). The call convinced Molesini that the earlier message had indeed been sent by his superior, Messina. Fideuram subsequently transferred €95 million (about $108 million) to accounts in mainland China and Hong Kong.
