Microsoft tells nonprofits their deleted data cannot be recovered
Microsoft had been providing Microsoft 365 Business Premium free of charge to small nonprofit organizations worldwide since 2013, but in May 2025 it announced that it would stop offering free licenses starting July 2025, switching to discounted paid subscriptions. Data associated with accounts that did not convert to paid earlier this year was all deleted. According to an email sent to affected customers, Microsoft admitted that "due to an error" it deleted the remaining data before the data retention and export deadline had passed, and its attempts to recover the data all failed, stating "I have researched recovery options, and unfortunately, the data cannot be recovered." Microsoft could not even determine exactly which data was lost. The software giant apologized to affected customers.
