Micron Taiwan factory union prepares for strike
Following Samsung and SK hynix, strike action is also brewing at Micron, the world's third-largest DRAM maker, at its two plants in Taiwan. On September 24, the Micron Taoyuan union, which has 2100 members and accounts for 70% of the entire plant, decided, under the Labor Dispute Resolution Act, to start a one-week strike vote on October 1. Once the number of supporters for the strike exceeds half of the union membership, it will obtain the right to strike. At the Micron Taichung plant with 12000 employees, the Taichung union will also negotiate with management again on October 22, and if talks break down, it may also hold a strike vote. An employee at the Taichung plant disclosed that union membership had originally stayed at around 400 members. However, after Samsung and SK hynix announced agreements with employees and decided to expand bonuses for employees, union membership surged rapidly, and now members of the Taichung plant union have exceeded 10000! That is equivalent to more than 80% of employees joining the union, a higher proportion than Taoyuan. The key trigger for Micron employees holding a strike vote is the profit-sharing system. In 2025, Micron's net profit has grown to US$81.5 billion, but employees received an average dividend equivalent to only 2.3 months' salary. After comparing the profit-sharing arrangements of other semiconductor companies, the union believes that Micron's bonus distribution method is not fair. The Micron union believes that currently 12% of the operating profit of Samsung's semiconductor division is distributed to employees, 10% at SK hynix, and only 4.4% at Micron. https://www.cw.com.tw/article/5143092
