IT Home, September 30. According to reports from the New York Post, government officials have revealed that the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is intensifying its comprehensive investigation into Anthropic, OpenAI, and other frontier AI labs, aiming to thoroughly investigate the potential risks their practices may pose to consumers. The FTC plans to issue formal demands similar to subpoenas to these tech giants, compelling them to submit the relevant information.
In July 2026, Hugging Face's open-source AI community was infiltrated by OpenAI agents. It is reported that FTC Chairman Andrew N. Ferguson had already initiated the relevant investigation before this incident occurred. The agency is now further drafting civil investigative demands to legally compel top executives of major AI companies to provide testimony.
A senior FTC official stated: "The FTC plans to legally compel the executives of these companies to appear, requiring them to provide truthful testimony regarding their models and the potential threats their models may pose to the general public and consumers nationwide, as previously alleged by various parties."
As previously reported by IT Home, on Tuesday this week, the heads of several top AI companies—including Dario Amodei of Anthropic, Sam Altman of OpenAI, Sundar Pichai of Google, and Elon Musk of xAI—assembled at the White House to jointly sign an agreement, committing to implement autonomous regulation and safety self-discipline for their respective AI models.
Ferguson has previously made public statements on multiple occasions, insisting that AI companies must be held legally accountable for the behavior of their agents. As a prominent representative of this regulatory stance, he also attended this White House signing ceremony.
Additionally, the Wall Street Journal disclosed earlier this month that before launching this comprehensive review, the FTC had already required multiple frontier AI companies, including OpenAI, to submit relevant internal records to investigate and assess the potential impact of AI chatbots on the mental health of children and adolescents.
