IT之家 news, September 30: According to a report yesterday by Singapore local media Asia Television, a Singaporean man has been prosecuted by the police for allegedly creating and spreading an image of a crocodile invading a reservoir. Singapore man sued for using AI to generate photos of crocodiles invading

According to the report, the man is named Ye Lin. At around 3 p.m. local time on August 20, he used Google's Gemini app to generate an image of a crocodile surfacing in a reservoir, and then sent the AI-generated photo to his colleague Min Min Oo.

The image quickly spread widely on the internet. Singapore's national water agency PUB immediately received reports that someone had spotted a crocodile in Pandan Reservoir. PUB subsequently contacted the National Parks Board to search for the crocodile in the reservoir and asked the public not to engage in any water activities near the reservoir.

On August 21 local time, PUB discovered that the image was not real and therefore chose to report the matter to the police. The same day, Ye Lin opened his phone and deleted the crocodile image and operation history from the Gemini app.

Ye Lin has been charged by the authorities with spreading false information, as well as intentionally deleting the photos afterwards to obstruct justice. Singapore police have stated that they take a zero-tolerance attitude toward anyone who spreads false information.

Ye Lin will appear in court again on November 10. If both of the above charges are established, he faces a maximum of 10 years in prison and a fine of 10,000 Singapore dollars (approximately RMB 52,585 at current exchange rates).
