Waveshare has launched the ESP32-C5-Touch-LCD-3.5, another ESP32-C5 development board with an integrated display, featuring a larger 3.5-inch color touch LCD, and optionally available with a BF3901 low-resolution (0.08MP) camera and/or a 500mAh battery.
The board also provides a speaker interface and built-in microphone for voice interaction, a six-axis IMU, temperature/humidity sensor, microSD card slot, and a 32-pin GPIO expansion header.
Key specifications
The wireless module is Espressif ESP32-C5-WROOM-1U-N32R8, with the SoC being the ESP32-C5HR8: a single-core 32-bit RISC-V processor up to 240MHz, plus a 40MHz low-power RISC-V core that serves as the main processor for power-sensitive scenarios; on-chip 384KB SRAM, 8MB PSRAM, 320KB ROM. Wireless supports dual-band (2.4GHz/5GHz) 802.11ax Wi-Fi 6 (with fallback to 802.11b/g/n), Bluetooth 5.0 LE, and 802.15.4 radio for Zigbee 3.0 and Thread 1.3. The module includes 32MB Flash and an IPEX antenna connector.
For the display, the official spec sheet lists a 262K-color IPS panel with 480×320 resolution and capacitive touch, using the ST7796 SPI display controller and FT6336 I2C touch controller (the article title, based on the actual board, says 3.5 inches). The optional camera is the BF3901 with 320×240 resolution. The audio chain includes an onboard MEMS microphone, a 2-pin speaker interface, the ES8311 low-power audio codec, and the NS4150B audio amplifier. USB is Type-C, used for power, flashing, and data. Sensors include the SHTC3 temperature/humidity sensor and the QMI8658 six-axis IMU. Expansion is via a 32-pin 2.54mm-pitch header, bringing out GPIO, UART, I2C, etc. Other features include power/reset/BOOT buttons, power and charging LEDs, and a PCF85063 RTC. Power can be supplied via USB-C 5V, or through a 2-pin connector for a 3.7V lithium battery, supported by the AXP2101 power management chip. Board dimensions are 95.11×63.67×14.10mm.
The specifications are quite close to the ESP32-C5-Touch-LCD-2.8 reported on in July, with the differences being a larger screen and higher resolution, an IPEX antenna (instead of a PCB antenna), an optional camera, a 32-pin GPIO header, and a more advanced AXP2101 PMU. (Note: the original spec sheet still lists the 480×320 IPS screen entry from the 2.8-inch version, which conflicts with the 3.5-inch naming; please refer to the manufacturer's page for accuracy.)
Waveshare provides factory firmware (reportedly based on ESPBrookesia), ESP-IDF and Arduino IDE getting started instructions, and an AI tutorial section containing the Xiaozhi AI voice assistant on its wiki.
This is the largest screen seen so far on an ESP32-C5 development board. Previous options include the LILYGO T-DONGLE-C5 (0.96-inch non-touch OLED), ESP32-C5-LCD-1.47 (1.47-inch non-touch LCD), and LILYGO T-Display C5 (1.9-inch IPS LCD with optional capacitive touch). They all use SPI screens; if the UI on this 3.5-inch model is too complex, rendering may hit performance limits and become laggy. For higher resolution and smoother GUI along with dual-band Wi-Fi 6, consider an ESP32-P4 + ESP32-C5 solution (such as the GUITION JC-ESP32P4-M3-DEV or Wireless Tag WT99P4C5-S1) paired with a MIPI screen.
Pricing: versions with or without the camera and battery are $37.99–43.99 on AliExpress, $43.99–47.99 on Amazon, and $31.99–35.99 from Waveshare's own store.
