On October 1, Chinese tech news outlet IT之家 reported that Tencent has inked its largest overseas lease deal with Oracle, securing access to approximately 100,000 advanced AI chips across multiple data centers in Southeast Asia. Both Tencent and Oracle have not responded to requests for comment.
According to informed sources, Tencent agreed to a five-year lease earlier this year covering several Oracle data centers in the region. The transaction is valued at around $7 billion (approximately 470.18 billion RMB), with a down payment of about 30%. Tencent plans to use this computing power to accelerate the development of its AI models and intelligent agent tools.
It is noted that ByteDance and Alibaba remain the largest clients of these Southeast Asian data centers. Such leasing agreements are permissible under US regulations and may provide access to advanced NVIDIA chips not available in China. Chinese tech giants and leading AI labs are leveraging these resources for tasks like model training.
Company data indicates that Tencent's capital expenditure in the second quarter jumped by 176% year-over-year to 53 billion RMB, primarily for AI infrastructure and prepaid computing resources. The company has also intensified its recruitment of top talent and reorganized its infrastructure and data departments.
