E-paper unexpectedly made a debut at Paris Fashion Week on Tuesday, as Taiwanese company E Ink Corp. collaborated with Japanese fashion brand ANREALAGE to launch a line of color-changing e-paper clothing.

The six outfits unveiled during Paris Fashion Week combine ANREALAGE’s experimental fashion philosophy with E Ink’s Prism technology, integrating e-paper components as part of the garment. According to E Ink, designer Kunihiko Morinaga used approximately 1,000 to 2,000 Prism components per outfit. Through different arrangements and programmed patterns, each outfit can switch between colors and designs, creating ever-changing visual effects as the models walk the runway.

Unlike self-illuminating screens, E Ink components reflect ambient light, allowing the garments to display different colors and patterns on their surfaces. E Ink Prism is a material technology that presents programmable colors and patterns in various shapes and sizes on e-paper surfaces, applicable to color-changing cars, automobile interiors, and fashion accessories.

E Ink requires no continuous power to maintain its image; it retains the displayed state only needing electricity during color or pattern transitions. This collaboration aligns with ANREALAGE’s exploration of non-conventional materials and the relationship between clothing and perception. Naoki Sumita, General Manager of E Ink Japan, noted that this approach resonates with E Ink’s goal of transforming static surfaces into dynamic, expressive experiences.

The 2027 Spring/Summer Paris Fashion Week ran from September 28 to October 6, featuring 68 shows and 33 presentations, including brands like Hermes, Givenchy, and Miu Miu.
