Onyx Boox Kant 2: New and compact e-reader with a range of functions

The Onyx Boox Kant 2 is a new e-reader in a rather unusual format. It is a relatively compact device with an E Ink display, which also supports memory cards.

The Onyx Boox Kant 2 is an e-reader very similar to the Onyx Boox Palma, measuring 159x80x8 (LxWxD) millimeters. The Carta 1200 backlit screen has a resolution of 824 x 1648, whereby the capacitive touchscreen with multi-touch support can display 16 shades of gray, but no colors. Brightness can be adjusted, which is likely to prove useful at night.

Depending on one's point of view, it is either an e-reader with Android or a tablet with an E Ink screen. Android 11 is used as the operating system, which is installed on 32 GB of storage. Four computing cores with a clock frequency of 2 GHz drive the operating system, while the RAM is quite limited at 2 GB. A microSD memory card reader is available, which should make the storing of large files easy and allow for the subsequent installation of apps.

The 3950 mAh battery promises long battery runtimes. If the e-reader is held horizontally, the display should automatically switch to landscape format. There are buttons on the side, presumably for volume adjustment, and a microphone and loudspeaker are integrated, which should allow for the playback of audio books. WiFi 802.11 b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 5.0 are supported, while USB-C is used for charging and wired connections. 

The Kant 2 is currently only listed in Russia and information on an international release date is still pending. The Onyx Boox Palma, which is equipped with a larger memory, is already available for sale.
