Lenovo Unveils ThinkBook Plus Twist at MWC 2023: Dual Displays Mode, Smart Paper Touch-Screen Tech

Lenovo has again shown off its innovative chops with its redesigned ThinkBook Twist at MWC 2023. Though it costs $1,649 in the United States, the ThinkBook Plus Twist is a unique piece of hardware that includes the latest 13th-generation Intel Core processor, two displays, and the new Smart Paper touch-screen technology.

Design

According to TechRadar, Lenovo has done away with the classic ThinkBook mouse buttons and its red laptop trackpoint with a sleek grey metallic finish and a conventional trackpad that is instantly attuned to modern laptop sensibilities.The hinge is centrally mounted on a rotating disc, and the base is pleasingly thin, resulting in a low overall weight and a slim profile. The keyboard has a curved keycap that makes typing more comfortable and dynamic. Although small, the trackpad is accurate and durable, with a firm click on the bottom half.

Display

According to a press release from Lenovo, the main display is a new narrow-bezel 13.3-inch 2.8K OLED panel with full touch and stylus support. The Twist has excellent color reproduction and brightness, perfect for the content savvy!

Meanwhile, the E Ink rear display incorporates Lenovo's new Smart Paper touch-screen technology, which, like the Amazon Kindle, uses e-paper. It is full-color and backlit, allowing it to be used in low-light environments.

The 12-inch diagonal e-paper display runs Windows 11 normally, albeit at a choppy refresh rate of 12Hz. It is also remarkably functional and ideal for writing or drawing, as the Lenovo Smart Paper also supports stylus input.

Modes

The ThinkBook Plus Twist's hinge sets it apart from other machines. In tablet mode, it works like a traditional e-reader. When closed, the E Ink rear display shows a static smartphone-style lock screen with the time and your calendar appointments.

You can also use it in laptop mode with the screen rotated, which Lenovo refers to as 'typewriter mode.' In this configuration, you can use the E Ink display to write or draw, while the main display is ideal for watching videos and whatnot.

The most apparent advantage of this mode is that it offers up to 24 hours of battery life due to the low power consumption of the E Ink display!

Camera, Audio, and Ports

TechRadar says the ThinkBook Plus Twist has two 1080p webcams, one above each display mode, and a physical camera kill switch for privacy.

It additionally features a fingerprint scanner but no IR cameras. The physical port selection is quite limited, with only two Thunderbolt 4-enabled USB-C charging ports.
